Galle

The place

A Dutch fort on a headland, four centuries old and still lived in. Inside the ramparts are cafés, galleries, and lanes of colonial houses; outside are the beaches of the south coast, a short drive in either direction.

Walk the walls at sunset when the lighthouse catches the last light and the town comes out to sit on the stones. It makes an easy base for the coast west to Weligama and Mirissa.
